Project 11: CAN Measure –Virtual Training Methods to Expand Canadian Rehabilitation Research Infrastructure

Principal Investigators

Dr. Michelle Kho | Associate Professor, McMaster University

Dr. Gordon Boyd | Associate Professor, Queen's University

Project Summary

This research project aims to address the inefficient and redundant training processes currently used for research staff assessing outcomes in ICU survivors. By developing a standardized virtual training strategy, the project intends to create a more efficient, accessible, and evidence-based approach to training assessors of physical and cognitive function in patients with post-COVID/post-ICU syndrome.

Key Points:

  • Problem: Current research staff training methods are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and often lack a standardized approach, leading to inefficiencies.
  • Solution: The project proposes developing a standardized virtual training strategy for assessing physical and cognitive function, leveraging experiences from virtual training during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Objectives:
    • Develop a standardized virtual training strategy for one cognitive and one functional outcome, with the potential to scale to other outcomes
    • Implement the training strategy within ongoing research programs
    • Evaluate the impact of the training on research personnel learning, efficiency, and patient/family experience
  • Approach: A mixed methods approach using the IDEO design-thinking model will be adopted.

Overall, the project seeks to improve research capacity and the quality of care for ICU survivors by streamlining and standardizing the training process for outcome assessors.
